What does Work Life Balance mean?
In 2022 the term “Work Life Balance” is becoming increasingly important for individuals and employers, but what does it mean?
Maintaining a Work/Life Balance is about separating your personal and professional lives without allowing one to negatively affect the other. Both are important and neither should be neglected as a healthy Work/Life balance will enable you to thrive in both your professional and personal life.
Here are four main reasons why you absolutely must maintain a healthy Work/Life Balance.
- To maintain your Mental Health
- To take care of your Physical Health and Wellbeing
- To increase your productivity
- You only get one life! So, live it to the fullest and ensure you are spending time with your loved ones, doing the things that bring you joy
The truth is that work/life balance means something different to every individual, but here are some tips to help you find a balance that is right for you.
Let go of perfectionism
Letting go of perfectionism will allow you to avoid becoming burned out.
Unplug
Technology has created expectations of constant accessibility. The workday never seems to end. When you finish work, try to switch off your Phone and Laptop so that you can allow yourself to switch off and spend time with your family.
Learn to say no
If you are making yourself available 24/7 and taking on every task that is asked of you this can become overwhelming and cause burnout. It can also affect your ability to productively perform your job role. So, learn to harness the power of no.
Exercise
Exercising is often the first thing to go out of the window when our calendars fill up however it is important to remember to exercise. Exercise is an effective stress relief tool, and it pumps feel good endorphins through our body. It helps to lift our mood and make us feel more productive in general.
Leave work at work
Imagine you’re just about to leave your workplace. Before you do, write a note to yourself listing the outstanding tasks or any work things that are on your mind. Then shut the diary, turn of your PC and leave it. Focus on the image of shutting your diary, saving your work, and turning off your PC.
Here are three signs that indicate you have a healthy work/life balance:
- You are about to meet all your deadlines at work whilst still being able to make time for your loved ones
- You get enough time throughout the week to sleep properly and eat well
- When you get home from work you can switch off and enjoy your down time without worrying about work
